Baba Michel Mendy – Senegal
Chakaba – Stick Dancer
Michel has traveled the world performing this traditional dance of Senegal. 15 feet tall on stilts and dancing to the rhythm while wearing a sacred spiritual mask and costume, has left every audience amazed and cheering for more. In Africa, this spiritual dance comes forth to bless and dispel negativity. The tallness, the stilts, is a reminder to look up to the great things our ancestors did that came before us. It also represents maintaining balance in life. The mask and costume contain objects that are plant, animal, mineral, the earth, water, the sea, man and woman. It brings forth the concept that these things are important, and a healthy world must strive to be in balance with nature for harmony, peace and continuity.
